Well in my campaign (Sparta) I focused on Infantry training bonus only + morale boosts. It worked out great so far. I ignored any workshops to be honest. I guess you could split everything up even more and dedicate your military provinces to specific types of units (archers, infantry, cavalry). It is possible in my opinion to go even more hardcore with the following scenario:. Outsourcing the complete food chain to other provinces.

4 Military buildings in capitol. Aliens colonial marines models. 6 Temple buildings (If you have 3 minor settlements)Using the temple with the most happiness and the temple of war you can create some ruthless war machines.
